چکیده

Development of theory and experiments to retrieve Green’s functions from cross correlations of recorded wave fields between two receivers has grown rapidly in the last seven years. The theory includes situations with flow, mechanical and electromagnetic disturbances and their mutual coupling. Here an electromagnetic theory is presented for Green’s function retrieval from cross correlations that incorporates general bianisotropic media, which is the most general class of linear media. In the presence of dispersive nonreciprocal media, the Green’s function is obtained by cross correlating the recordings at two locations of fields generated by sources on a boundary. The only condition for this relation to be valid is that the medium is non-dissipative. The principle of bianisotropic Green’s function retrieval by cross correlation is illustrated with a numerical example.

Retrieving the potential field response from cross-correlations

We show that the two-point cross-correlation of potential-field recordings is equal to the Green’s function between the two points. This holds under the condition that spatially and temporally uncorrelated noise sources exist throughout the volume. They should have a known amplitude spectrum and their correlated strengths should be equal to the real part of the dissipative medium property funct...

Retrieving the Green’s function in an open system by cross correlation: A comparison of approaches (L)

We compare two approaches for deriving the fact that the Green’s function in an arbitrary inhomogeneous open system can be obtained by cross correlating recordings of the wave field at two positions. One approach is based on physical arguments, exploiting the principle of time-reversal invariance of the acoustic wave equation. The other approach is based on Rayleigh’s reciprocity theorem. Using...

Perturbative Approach to Calculating the Correlation Function of bi-isotropic Metamaterials

A bi-isotropic magneto-electric metamaterials is modeled by two independent reservoirs. The reservoirs contain a continuum of three dimensional harmonic oscillators, which describe polarizability and magnetizability of the medium. The paper aimed to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field on bi-isotropic. Starting with a total Lagrangian and using Euler-Lagrange equation, researcher cou...

Background Velocity Estimation by Cross Correlation of Ambient Noise Signals in the Radiative Transport Regime

The cross correlations of the wave signals emitted by ambient noise sources can be used to estimate the Green’s function of the wave equation in an inhomogeneous medium. In this paper we clarify the role of random scattering in the Green’s function estimation in the radiative transport regime and we show how this insight can be used to estimate the velocity of propagation of a smooth background...

Data-driven Green’s function retrieval and application to imaging with multidimensional deconvolution

An iterative method is presented that allows one to retrieve the Green’s function originating from a virtual source located inside a medium using reflection data measured only at the acquisition surface. In addition to the reflection response, an estimate of the travel times corresponding to the direct arrivals is required. However, no detailed information about the heterogeneities in themedium...
